Minnesota State Representative Jeff Witte shared a legislative update with constituents on March 27, outlining recent progress at the Capitol, including developments related to government oversight and local fraud concerns.

Witte said the Minnesota House State Government Committee recommended passage of a bill to establish an independent Office of the Inspector General, which he described as closely mirroring a version that passed unanimously in the Senate. The proposal aims to create a nonpartisan office for increased transparency and accountability in state government oversight.

“This is a step in the right direction, and I’ll keep pushing every day to make sure it gets across the finish line,” Witte said. He noted that bipartisan support was key in moving the legislation forward, emphasizing that “we were serious about preserving the bipartisan, bicameral work already done in the Senate—and we weren’t going to accept anything less.” The bill now moves to the House Ways and Means Committee.

Addressing recent reports of potential fraud affecting Lakeville residents, Witte said some households received official state notices regarding paid family leave addressed to businesses they did not recognize. He and Senator Zach Duckworth sent a letter seeking answers from state agencies responsible for administering these programs. “We’ve made it clear that whether this is a larger-scale fraud attempt or a significant administrative error, Minnesotans deserve immediate clarity,” Witte said.

Witte also highlighted ongoing efforts with law enforcement organizations such as Law Enforcement Labor Services and meetings with local police departments as part of discussions around improving duty disability policies for officers. In addition, he discussed community conversations about mental health resources available through organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness Dakota County chapter.

As legislators prepare for Easter break next week, Witte encouraged continued communication from constituents: “Your input truly makes a difference in the work I do here at the Capitol, and I couldn’t do it without you!”
