City of Farmington issued the following announcement on Jan. 21.
When you’re out getting snacks for the big game don’t be surprised if your favorite teacher, local police chief or elected representative is bagging your groceries to help raise money to fight hunger in our community. On Saturday, February 1 from 9 am – 5 pm and Sunday, February 2 from 10 am – 4 pm, engaged community members from across Dakota County will bag groceries for tips at seven Cub Foods stores throughout Dakota County to raise money in support of ending local hunger.
The “Super Bagging” event began in 2014 as a fundraiser for The Open Door and has grown to become an annual tradition for community leaders and one of the largest fundraising events for the Eagan-based hunger relief organization. In its 7 th year, the annual event, is expanding to benefit two more local hunger relief organizations - Neighbors Inc., and 360 Communities. The goal this year is to raise $50,000 in cash and food across all three organizations.
The Open Door’s hope is that there isn’t only growth in the size of the event, but amount of food and funds raised. “Having our hunger relief partners join this event will bring even greater impact and visibility to the issue of hunger in Dakota County,” said Jason Viana, Executive Director of The Open Door. “Our community really rallies around this event and the generous response to Super Bagging makes a huge impact on our to respond to our neighbors in need.”
At each of the 7 Cub Foods stores volunteers will greet neighbors and friends at Cub Store, bag groceries for tips, and promote Community Cares food bag purchases – all to help stock the shelves for people in need.
The event’s growth would not be possible without the help of Scott Swenson, Senior Vice President and Chief Banking Officer at Drake Bank and Cub Foods. “Drake Bank and Cub Foods have teamed up for an event that stocks food shelves during a time in the year when donations slow but need continues. It is exciting to see how this event has grown over the years. With seven stores participating and more than 400 volunteers bagging groceries for tips – this year will be our best event yet.”
All three organizations are seeking community volunteers to support the largest Super Bagging effort to date. Two-hour shifts are available on Sat. Feb. 1 and Sun. Feb. 2 at Cub Stores in Eagan, Apple Valley, Lakeville (Kenwood Trail), Rosemount and Inver Grove Heights. Sign up individually or bring your family, school group or co-workers and sign up for an entire shift.
