Alvaro Martinez believes Northfield is special. The sense of community he has felt in Northfield has kept him and his wife, Lucy, here for 30 years. Martinez says the couple considered moving away many years ago, but that idea was short lived.

“We love Northfield because it is quiet and the people are friendly, Martinez said. “It also has great schools for my kids.”

To Martinez, family is everything. Alvaro and Lucy have four kids: two out of college, one in high school and one in elementary school. Family guides everything he does including his work.

For the past 25 years, Alvaro has owned Quality Touch Painting and has completed a variety of painting projects throughout the community. Yet Alvaro and Lucy felt they could serve the community in another way — through food.

“We opened because we didn’t find real Mexican food here in Northfield,” Martinez said. “Not like back home.”

Martinez grew up in Mexico and wanted to bring his culture from there here. While Quality Touch Paint remains Martinez’s primary business, the Martinezs decided to open Coco’s Place last May.

When a customer walks into Coco’s, Martinez wants them to feel like they have stepped into Mexico. The walls are bright yellow, Hispanic banners hang from the ceiling and Mexican-made decorations fill the space.

Coco’s carries traditional Mexican items for purchase including chips, candies and ice cream, and has a large menu including tacos, tortas and daily deals. But Martinez argues their food differs from most Mexican restaurants. Everything Coco’s serves stems from his childhood.

“My mom and my grandma were very good cooks,” Martinez said. “We keep their tradition by using the same recipes.”

Martinez’s mom and grandma have passed away, and Martinez believes he keeps their memory alive by serving their recipes to the community.

Martinez is also excited about an upcoming expansion. Across the street from Coco’s Place, Martinez will open Coco’s Two at the end of August. Coco’s Two will offer traditional Mexican ice cream and grocery items. By moving these products to Coco’s Two, Martinez says Coco’s Place will be able to optimize customer service by creating additional seating.

Martinez looks forward to opening of Coco’s Two and is hoping to grow even further in the future. Eventually, the Martinezs hope to open a third Coco’s in the Apple Valley area. The goal of opening other locations are not solely for profit, however.

Instead, the Martinezs want to serve people throughout Minnesota authentic Mexican food. Martinez says he is honored to give Northfield, the town he loves, a taste of Mexico.

Un sabor de México — Coco’s Place

Los Martínez quieren compartir México con Northfield a través de la auténtica comida mexicana.

Álvaro Martínez cree que Northfield es especial. El sentido de comunidad que ha sentido en Northfield les ha mantenido a él y a su mujer, Lucy, aquí durante 30 años. Martínez dice que la pareja consideró mudarse hace muchos años, pero esa idea duró poco.

“Nos encanta Northfield porque es tranquilo y la gente es amable, dijo Martínez. “También tiene grandes escuelas para mis hijos”.

Para Martínez, la familia lo es todo. Él y su mujer tienen cuatro hijos: dos fuera de la Universidad, uno en la escuela secundaria y otro en la escuela primaria. Su familia guía todo lo que hace, incluido su trabajo.

Durante los últimos 25 años, ha sido propietario de Quality Touch Painting y ha realizado diversos proyectos de pintura en toda la comunidad. Sin embargo, Álvaro y Lucy sintieron que podían server a la comunidad de otra manera— a través de la comida.

“Abrimos porque no encontramos verdadera comida mexicana aquí en Northfield”, dijo Martínez. “No como en casa”.

Martínez creció en México y quiso traer su cultura de allí aquí. Aunque Quality Touch Paint sigue siendo el negocio principal de Martínez, los Martínez decidieron abrir Coco’s Place, el pasado mes de mayo.

Cuando un cliente entra en Coco’s Martínez quiere que sienta que ha entrado en México. Las paredes son de color amarillo brillante, del techo cuelgan banderas hispanas y los adornos hechos en México llenan el espacio.

Coco’s ofrece artículos mexicanos tradicionales, como patatas fritas, caramelos y helados, y tiene un amplio menú que incluye tacos, tortas y ofertas diarias. Pero Martínez sostiene que su comida es diferente a la de la mayoría de los restaurantes mexicanos. Todo lo que sirve Coco’s proviene de su infancia.

“Mi madre y mi abuela eran muy buenas cocineras”, dijo Martínez. “Mantenemos su tradición utilizando las misma recetas”.

Tanto la madre como la abuela de Martínez han fallecido, pero Martínez cree que mantiene viva su memoria sirviendo sus recetas a la comunidad.

Martínez también está entusiasmado con una próxima expansión. Al otro lado de la calle de Coco’s Place, Martínez abrirá Coco’s Two a finales de agosto. Coco’s Two ofrecerá helados mexicanos tradicionales y productos de alimentación. Al trasladar estos productos a Coco’s Two, Martínez dice que Coco’s Place podrá optimizar el servicio al cliente creando asientos adicionales.

Martínez espera la apertura de Coco’s Two y espera crecer aún más en el futuro. Con el tiempo, los Martínez esperan abrir un tercer Coco’s en la zona de Apple Valley. Sin embargo, el objetivo de abrir otros locales no es únicamente para obtener beneficios.

En cambio, los Martínez quieren server a la gente de todo Minnesota auténtica comida mexicana. Martínez dice que es un honor dar a Northfield, la ciudad que ama, un sabor de México.
