Minnesota State Representative Jeff Witte has provided an update on legislative activities at the Capitol, emphasizing his commitment to serving the community and collaborating with colleagues for policies that benefit all Minnesotans. Witte highlighted ongoing efforts to lower property taxes and ensure resources are used effectively for those in need.

He stated, "I’m focused on finding real solutions to lower taxes—especially property taxes—and make sure the resources we have are being used in the most effective way possible to help those who need it most."

Witte addressed public safety, education, and fiscal responsibility as key priorities during this session. He said, "We’re working hard to improve public safety, strengthen education, and ensure that our state’s budget is not only responsible but also reflective of our shared values."

The representative introduced the "Make Minnesota Safe" plan, a legislative initiative aimed at strengthening law enforcement, holding violent offenders accountable, and increasing transparency within the criminal justice system. The proposal includes 13 provisions such as mandatory minimum sentences for first-degree sex trafficking, harsher penalties for assaulting peace officers, and stricter consequences for trespassing on or damaging critical infrastructure.

Witte explained the goals of these reforms: "By implementing these reforms, we aim to empower law enforcement, prioritize victims’ rights, and restore trust in the justice system." He added that transparency is essential: "Transparency in how the justice system operates is crucial for building trust, and this proposal will help ensure that Minnesotans know how their system is working and where improvements are needed."

As part of his outreach efforts, Witte met with directors from Hy-Vee in Lakeville to discuss challenges facing local businesses. He also served as keynote speaker at Retailers Day at the Capitol. Drawing from his experience as a police officer for 27 years, he pledged support for creating a task force to address Organized Retail Crime.

Witte congratulated Steve Allen of Brackett’s Crossing Country Club on being named 2024 Lakeville Chamber Business Person of the Year.

He also recognized Dominica Bernstein, his Media Writer at the Minnesota House of Representatives. Bernstein recently graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a degree in Political Science.

Witte concluded by inviting constituents to share their feedback and concerns with his office.
