The Lakeville community and Minnesota state leaders are responding to the recent tragedy at Annunciation Catholic School, which occurred on August 27. State Representative Jeff Witte expressed his condolences to the families, children, teachers, and staff affected by the incident. He also thanked first responders, hospital staff, and spiritual leaders for their efforts in the aftermath.

Witte referenced another national event—the assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah—and called for an end to political violence. "Whether or not you agreed with Charlie’s politics, he was a man standing up for what he believed in — and in America, that should never cost anyone their life. Political disagreement should never lead to political violence. These events are a sobering reminder of how fragile life is and how urgent it is to restore respect, civility, and a culture that values every human life. I also hope we can take moments to cherish the people around us, unplug from our devices, and appreciate the life we have," Witte said.

He recently appeared on The Sunday Take with Blois Olson podcast alongside Senator Cwodzinski to discuss measures Minnesota could adopt following a church mass shooting. As a former school resource officer, Witte advocated for practical steps to protect students and prevent future tragedies.

Witte emphasized bipartisan cooperation as discussions continue about school safety legislation in Minnesota. He highlighted his sponsorship of the SHIELD Act—a proposal aimed at expanding affordable security options statewide based on practices already implemented in Lakeville Schools.

"Rest assured, as these discussions continue, I approach my role focused on bipartisan solutions—not partisan talking points. Should the Governor call a special session, my priority will be working across the aisle to achieve reforms that make our schools and communities safer," Witte stated.

He outlined several priorities: providing grants through the SHIELD Act for school security improvements; increasing access to mental health services; strengthening penalties for repeat violent offenders; and ensuring schools have flexibility regarding resource officers.

September marks both Suicide Prevention Month and National Recovery Month. Drawing from his experience as a crisis negotiator with Burnsville Police Department for 18 years, Witte underscored the importance of compassion when supporting those facing mental health challenges or addiction crises.

"As a state, we must do more to ensure that those in crisis have access to the care and support they need. That means strengthening our mental health system, expanding treatment options, and continuing to build communities where recovery and hope are possible," he wrote.

With the new school year underway in Lakeville, local police have increased patrols near schools as an added safety measure. Witte recognized School Resource Officers’ contributions toward maintaining safe learning environments.

The community also recently honored first responders at the 11th Annual Police and Firefighters Ball hosted by the Lakeville Public Safety Foundation. Firefighter Joe Tomes and Detective Mike Lamm were named Officers of the Year during this event.

Reflecting on September 11 commemorations this month, Witte urged residents not only to remember those lost but also "to recommit ourselves to being there for one another—whether that’s checking in on a friend, listening without judgment, or supporting policies that expand mental health and recovery resources."

As fall approaches, Witte thanked constituents for their engagement at local events throughout Lakeville district: "Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives...I’m grateful to serve you and I’m always here to listen, learn, and take action for our district."
