City of Apple Valley issued the following announcement on Dec. 31.
City ordinances provide minimum standards for trees that property owners should follow to ensure beautiful, safe, and healthy trees. Here is an overview and some additional information that will be helpful for you in maintaining your trees.
Winter and late winter while trees are dormant can be an ideal time to remove broken tree limbs and routine pruning. Trees near streets, sidewalks and trails should be trimmed so as to not affect use of these right of way areas. Limbs overhanging sidewalks may be no lower than 10 feet in height and limbs overhanging streets may be no lower than 13 feet in height. Trees near intersections should be trimmed adequately to not affect sightlines for traffic and pedestrians. Broken tree limbs should be removed to avoid potentially hazardous conditions.
Remember that all tree branches, limbs, and logs should be properly disposed and not left accumulated on the property. Dakota County provided information on sites that accept yard waste year round. Please also be aware that contractors doing any sort of tree work in the City including cutting, trimming, pruning, removal, spraying or otherwise treating of trees must first have a license issued through the City. A list of licensed contractors is available on the City’s website and can be found by following the link below.
