Rep. Tony Jurgens is the lead author on a bill that would exempt Social Security from state taxes.
In a statement, Jurgens said that demographers have found that many Minnesotans leave the state once they reach retirement age, some for the weather, but most leave because of the tax on their social security income. Minnesota is an outlier. Jurgens said 37 other states have found a way to get by without taxing social security income.
Jurgens said in 2017 House Republicans led the effort to exempt social security from state taxes. That effort helped reduce or eliminate income taxes on 250,000 Minnesotans.
"This would help our seniors who’ve worked their whole lives paying into Social Security," Jurgens said. "It’s nonsensical to tax them for decades during their working years and then tax them again when they’re using those Social Security benefits. This is a common-sense measure that is supported by the vast majority of Minnesotans."
