CITY OF COATES: New Organics Drop-Off Site To Open In Hastings

Composting

City of Coates issued the following announcement on May 21.

A new residential organics drop-off site will open June 1 at the Dakota County Transportation Shop, 900 County Road 47 in Hastings. Dakota County residents will be able to drop off organics, such as food scraps and paper towels, to the site for free. All registered participants will receive free compostable bags to use at home and helpful tips. Sign up by visiting the Organics Drop-off page, calling 952-891-7557 or emailing organics@co.dakota.mn.us.

Organics drop-off sites go beyond backyard composting. All food scraps, including meat, bones and dairy products, can be dropped off. The Mulch Store, a commercial compost facility, processes the materials at higher temperatures to kill bacteria and turns them into compost.

Nearly 4,400 Dakota County residents use the four existing drop-off locations in Eagan, Lakeville, Rosemount and West St. Paul. More than 7,700 pounds of food scraps are kept out of the landfill each week through these sites.
