Minnesota State Rep. Tony Jurgens (R-Cottage Grove) spoke out recently about the failure of the legislature to address “lunch shaming” at schools in the omnibus education policy bill.
Jurgens had sponsored House File 55 to address the issue, and moved to have the language from that bill added to House File 163.
“Yesterday in the final day to pass bills during the 2020 regular session, I tried to get the lunch shaming language from my bill, HF55, inserted into the omnibus education policy bill as an amendment,” Jurgens posted on Facebook. “During the debate, the bill was tabled, then we recessed for several hours and with a half hour until the constitutional adjournment, the bill and my amendment were brought back up.”
The vote on the amendment failed with a vote that fell primarily along party lines, Jurgens said.
“This will get across the finish line someday but in the meantime, I'll think back to this debate the next time I hear that a hungry child had his or her lunch dumped in the garbage because their meal account didn't have money,” he said.
