New resource guides residents through accessory housing | Dakota County
Dakota County residents considering adding attached or detached housing for older adult relatives or others have a new resource.
Dakota County Public Health has released a guide to accessory dwelling units — attached or detached housing units on the same lot as a single-family home. They can be an affordable housing option for older adults seeking some independence while staying close to family.
The new guide includes information about cities in Dakota County that allow accessory dwelling units and the construction and occupancy regulations. Accessory dwelling units are not permitted in all Dakota County cities, and the guide includes information for those who want to encourage those cities to allow them.
The accessory dwelling guide is part of the county's Communities for a Lifetime Initiative, which helps create healthy and accessibility communities for all ages.
