CITY OF EAGAN: Wins National Honor For Public Safety, Again

Publicsafety

City of Eagan issued the following announcement on Dec. 9.

The City of Eagan won the top national honor for safety in the Voice of the People Awards. The award was based on community input provided by residents in a 2018 survey. Specifically, 98 percent of Eagan residents shared that they feel safe in their neighborhood and 97 percent shared that they feel safe in commercial areas. Community members also rated the quality of fire services at 97 percent and police service at 94 percent.  Overall, residents rated their feeling of safety at 91 percent and the quality of life in Eagan at 97 percent.

The high community ratings coupled with how the city approaches safety in the community led to the International City/County Management Association and National Research Center awarding Eagan the top award for the second consecutive time. According to the National Research Center, which hosts the National Citizen Survey™, the largest public opinion benchmark database for cities and counties, the community feedback Eagan received in the national survey placed the City in the top tier for safety across the country.

City Administrator Dave Osberg shared, “We know through community input that Eagan residents’ number one priority is public safety. That’s why it such an honor to win this top award, again. It is extremely gratifying to know that nearly every resident feels safe. Eagan has always prided itself on providing the highest level of public safety,” he continued. “By investing in our people and equipment, engaging with our community and adapting to changing demands of our increasingly diverse population, we seem to have found the right formula to help people feel safe in all corners of our community – and we are proud of that.”

Police Chief Roger New stated, “It’s truly an honor to be recognized as one of the safest communities in the United States. We work hard to ensure our community is safe while seeking out ideas to build trust with those we serve. This approach will allow us to continue to build partnerships within our community, which will ensure the on-going success of Eagan will be a safe place to live.”

Fire Chief Mike Scott shared, “Over the past few years we’ve moved from one of the largest volunteer fire departments in the state to a full-time fire department with three fire stations staffed with firefighters all trained as EMTs that are on-site 24/7. And we are seeing immediate results; response times have been cut in half – from 14 minutes, to seven. The quicker response time means that we have a better chance to save lives and property.”

Eagan previously won the Voice of the People award for safety in 2016. The City was also nominated for the top honor in two other categories including our local economy and built environment.
